DUAL EXCELLENCE TEENAGE SUPERSTAR AWARD

A competition for teenage students of ARMTA Calgary teachers who show excellence and commitment in more than one discipline. One discipline must be music or speech arts and must be taught by an ARMTA Calgary teacher. The second discipline can be any other extracurricular activity that meets the requirements.

NOTES OF IMPORTANCE

Important Qualifications

1) Activities must take place between September 1, 2024 and August 31, 2025.
2) ARMTA discipline must be Level 3 standard or higher
3) Must be between the ages of 13 and 19 as of August 31, 2025

Important Terms

1) PRIMARY DISCIPLINE: ARMTA studies (music or speech arts).
2) SECONDARY DISCIPLINE: Any other extracurricular activity, study or sport.
3) ACTIVITY PERIOD: Timeline during which both disciplines are studied/performed.

1) Activity period: between September 1, 2024 and August 31, 2025.
2) Application deadline: November 23, 2025
3) Results announcement: January 31, 2026 (or earlier)

CONTEST DESCRIPTION

An award competition for students who demonstrate accomplishment in an ARMTA discipline (music or speech arts), as well as a secondary* discipline. Examples of secondary disciplines include, but are not limited to: sports, dance, art, chess, debate club; any activity that meets the required time commitment as per competition regulations below. Secondary disciplines can also be music or speech arts, taught by ARMTA or non-ARMTA instructors. Entrants must complete the application process, which includes details of activities and competitions, supporting documentation and forms completed by instructors.

**Secondary discipline(s) must be extracurricular, taking place outside of regular school hours

*Group musical activities, such as marching bands, concert bands, or choirs, will count as a secondary discipline.
**Activities may be organized by the school, but training/competitions/performances must take place outside of class time.

Entry Guidelines

    1. Must be a student with an ARMTA Calgary teacher in good standing during the activity period (September 1, 2024 – August 31, 2025)
  1. Must be between the ages of 13 and 19 as of August 31, 2025.
  2. Must be studying music or speech arts at minimum level 3 standard.
  3. Must reside in Alberta.
  4. Must submit an application through our online form (Application Button at top of screen and at bottom of screen).
  5. Secondary discipline coaches/instructors must submit a form.
  6. Primary discipline instructors may be asked to verify performances.
  7. Must prove dedication and accomplishment in both disciplines.
  8. Must write a 3-5 paragraph essay to a maximum of 500 words describing your dedication and aspirations to both disciplines and how you excel at them. Explain why your commitments deserve an award.

Rules & Regulations

Students who do not meet the contest requirements
as per the rules and regulations, will be disqualified.

Activities that take place outside of the activity period (Sept. 1, 2024 – Aug. 31, 2025) will not be considered.
Please keep all programs, results, adjudications, etc. that prove participation. 

Primary Discipline (ARMTA)

1. Must participate in their primary discipline for a minimum of 6 months during the activity period.
2. Must prove accomplishment in music or speech arts through one of the following four methods:
     a. Practical exam completion of RCM Level 3 or higher.
     b. Performance of 2 or more solo pieces/selections at one of the local music festivals with written adjudication. Pieces could be in one class, or split between different classes. Festival must be located in Alberta.
     c. Participation in a minimum of two organized public performances, performing at least two different solo pieces/selections across the performances, with supporting documentation.
     d. Performance of two different solo pieces/selections split between one festival class and one recital, with supporting documentation.
          NOTE: All Pieces/selections must be Level 3 standard or higher. Entrants will receive extra credit for completing more than one of the requirements and for performing a higher number of pieces/selections throughout the activity period.

Secondary Discipline

Must prove dedication to a secondary discipline (or disciplines) in the following ways:
     a. Secondary discipline(s) require(s) a combined minimum average of 4 hours a week of practise, training or events for a minimum of 6 months a year.
     b. Activities/training/practising must be extracurricular and take place outside of school hours.
     c. Secondary discipline can be a mix of two activities to meet the weekly hour commitment.
     d. Entrants can submit results from exams/competitions/performances that occur outside of regular weekly commitments and will receive additional credit for participating in at least one.
     e. Must be guided by a coach/instructor – cannot be self taught. Coach/instructor will confirm entrant’s participation through our online form.

Application Process

c. Secondary discipline coaches/instructors will be required to verify hour commitment. Coaches/instructors must complete our online form, commenting on the student’s commitment and achievements. Entrants are responsible for sending their coaches/instructors the link to the form. Secondary coaches/instructors may be contacted for further information.
d. Enter the pieces/selections performed as part of the Primary discipline, with dates performed and type of performance.
e. Documentation to support Primary discipline performances through: exam result(s), festival adjudication(s), or public performance documentation (recital programs). Participants must submit documentation to prove participation in at least one of the three, but can submit documentation to support any in which they participated. Students who have public performances, but no exams or festival participation, must submit programs from a minimum of two organized public performances in which they participated. Any additional performances without programs must be confirmed by instructors. ALL supporting documents must be uploaded as .pdf or .jpeg files. DO NOT send links to websites.
f. Enter any extra competitions, exams, tournaments, finals performances, etc., related the Secondary discipline, as well as any awards and/or results that fall outside of typical weekly commitments*. Regular weekly games/performances should not be submitted here.
g. Documentation to support letter f: ALL supporting documents must be uploaded as .pdf or .jpeg files. DO NOT send links to websites.
h. Short essay (3-5 paragraphs, maximum 500 words) from the student, explaining their dedication to ALL disciplines and why they deserve the award. Students should discuss both the primary and secondary disciplines and how they balance the various activities. Any additional performances or activities related to the primary discipline can be discussed here. Every essay must be original and written by that student without assistance.

*For secondary disciplines that have weekly scheduled games, competitions, performances, etc., those activities count as part of the regular weekly hour commitment. Additional competitions and performances, such as tournaments, finals, exams, etc., can be mentioned with documentation that shows participation/results and includes student’s name.
