is pleased to announce a NEW competition for teenage students

DUAL EXCELLENCE: TEENAGE SUPERSTAR AWARD

A competition for teenage students of ARMTA Calgary teachers who show excellence and commitment in more than one discipline. Second discipline is NOT limited to music or speech arts! Students aged 13 to 19 may enter in one of two categories (see below). Cash prizes will be awarded in each category.

CONTEST DESCRIPTION

CATEGORY 1

One ARMTA Discipline 
and one Secondary Discipline

An award for students at minimum level 3 standard who demonstrate accomplishment in an ARMTA discipline (music or speech arts), as well as a secondary* discipline that is outside of ARMTA instruction.

Examples of secondary disciplines include, but are not limited to: sports, dance, art, chess; anything with a competitive element and the required time commitment as per competition regulations below. Secondary disciplines must be extracurricular, taking place outside of regular school hours.

*Group musical activities, such as marching bands, concert bands, or choirs, will count as a secondary discipline in Category 1.

CATEGORY 2

Two ARMTA Disciplines

An award for students at minimum level 3 standard who demonstrate accomplishment in two ARMTA disciplines (music / speech arts). Students can excel at two different instruments (including voice), or an instrument and speech arts. Both subject areas must be taught by ARMTA Calgary teachers.

First place: $200

Second place: $150

Third place: $125

There will also be 3 random draws of $100!

Entry Guidelines

    1. Must be a student with an ARMTA Calgary teacher in good standing during the activity period (September 1, 2023 – August 31, 2024)
  1. Must be between the ages of 13 and 19 as of August 31, 2024.
  2. Must be studying music or speech arts at minimum level 3 standard.
  3. Must live in Alberta.
  4. Must submit an application form (see Application Buttons below).
  5. Must prove dedication and accomplishment in both disciplines (see applicable category for details).
  6. Must write a 3-5 paragraph essay to a maximum of 500 words describing your dedication and aspirations to both disciplines and how you excel at them. Explain why your commitments deserve an award.

CATEGORY 1

One ARMTA Discipline and
One Secondary Discipline

ARMTA Discipline

  1. Must be taught by an ARMTA Calgary teacher.
  2. Students must prove accomplishment in music or speech arts through ONE of the following methods:
    A) Practical exam completion of RCM Level 3 or greater with a minimum mark of 70%. Or…
    B) Performance of 3 or more solo pieces/selections at one of the local music festivals (pieces at minimum level 3 standard) with written adjudication indicating achievement in the top two tiers/levels. Pieces must be memorized. Pieces could be in one class, or split between different classes. Festival must be located in Alberta. Or…
    C) Participation in a minimum of two public performances, performing a minimum of two different pieces at minimum level 3 standard across performances, as confirmed by their instructor.
    NOTE: For method C only: Students must FIRST ask the teacher for permission for us to email a separate form to them to complete.

Secondary Discipline

  1. Students must FIRST ask the secondary discipline instructor or coach for permission for us to email a separate form to them to complete.
  2. Students must prove dedication to a secondary discipline in ALL of the following methods:
    A) Secondary discipline must be extracurricular and cannot include practising or training for a credit class, even if those hours take place outside of class.
    B) Secondary discipline requires an average of 4 hours a week of practise or training for minimum 6 months a year. And…
    C) Activities/training/practising must be extracurricular and take place outside of school hours. And…
    D) Secondary discipline can be a mix of two or more activities, as long as the average weekly hour commitment spans 6 months or longer. And…
    E) Must participate in at least one competition or exam with good results.

CATEGORY 2

Two ARMTA Disciplines

First ARMTA Discipline

  1. Must be taught by an ARMTA Calgary teacher.
  2. Students must prove accomplishment in two different instruments (or voice or speech arts) through ONE of the following methods:
    A) Practical exam completion of RCM Level 3 or greater with a minimum mark of 70%. Or…
