School Credits

High School Accreditation for Private Music Study

Under the Alberta education system, students who study voice or a musical instrument privately may be granted credit for Choral Music 10/20/30 and/or Instrumental Music 10/20/30 toward high school graduation.

Credits for each course will be granted once, that is, students who are enrolled in Choral Music and study voice with a private teacher will not receive credits for both streams of study. The same applies to a student who takes Instrumental Music at school and studies an instrument with a private teacher. A maximum of 15 credits will be granted for a Choral Music 10/20/30 program or an Instrumental Music 10/20/30 program.

Credits for work in private music study completed in previous years may be applied once the student reaches high school.

Students should present an official transcript to the school office to prove that the equivalent of 10/20/30-level credits have been attained.

Credits will be granted for 10 and 20 level courses even if the student only shows documentation for completing the 30 level credits.

Footnotes:

All voice courses count as Choral Music 10/20/30 respectively for senior high school credits. All instrumental lessons are to be used for Instrumental Music 10/20/30 respectively.

Strings include violin, viola, violoncello and double bass.

Woodwind includes flute, oboe, bassoon, clarinet and saxophone.

Brass includes trumpet, French horn, trombone, euphonium and tuba.

Take Note:

  • If a student does not provide an official transcript for each lower course level being evaluated, the school will report a mark of “P” for pass, rather than a percentage score.
  • Mark breakdown is as follows: Practical – 70% of mark, Theory Components – 30% of mark submitted.
  • Currently, schools will recommend credits only on the basis of official transcripts as issued by Conservatory Canada, the Royal Conservatory of Toronto or Mount Royal College, Calgary. The London College of Music has recently applied for inclusion but status is still pending.

Originals of transcripts or diplomas must be submitted to the school office for consideration. These will be returned once the school principal has completed his/her evaluation.
